Xavier's Team
the founder
Aja Aguirre
Aja founded Xavier's Legacy shortly after her brother's passing in 2020. A chef and a footballer by trade, she is the first spoke of a group of elite athletes known on the road as Xavier's "core four".
the mom
Fionna Aguirre
Co-founder and mother to Xavier, Fionna is a certified event planner who has acted as head of off-road logistics for the biking team since 2021. She has filled almost every role behind the scenes, and also made a guest appearance in 2022 as a Day 7 cyclist on the home stretch.
the dad
Anthony Aguirre
Co-founder and father to Xavier, Tony is a seasoned athlete who has dabbled in almost any sport known to man. He is the second spoke of Xavier's "core four", and the first to stop his bike at the side of the road whenever he catches a glimpse of a highland cow. Likes: sports. Hates: Yorkshire Dales.
the glue
Jacob Lewis
An accountant by trade, Jake oozes calm amidst the chaos. Third spoke to Xavier's "core four" and cousin to Xavier, Jake is a member of the Squamish Nation (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw) and is therefore most comfortable when in or around a body of water.
the tech guy
Luke O'Hara
Co-organiser of events and partner to Aja, Luke is the head of the IT department for the cause and the final spoke of Xavier's "core four". When he's not busy injuring himself in every way imaginable, Luke can be found on a GAA pitch with a football or a hurley in hand.
the source
Mark McConway
Support group leader of Scotland's AL Amyloidosis support group, Mark is a seasoned cyclist living with AL Amyloidosis in sunny Scotland. His expertise was instrumental in guiding Aja and co. in putting together the inaugural ride in 2021, and he joined the team as a rider for all 622km in Ireland in 2023.
the advocate
Brian McHattie
Hailing from Ayr, Scotland, Brian became a member of the Scottish Amyloidosis Support Group after losing his beloved wife Beth to the disease in 2013. Since then, he has become an advocate for amyloidosis - particularly on spreading awareness to hospital workers and within the NHS.
the bhoy
Stephen Thom
Glasgow resident, cousin to Fionna, and lifelong Celtic supporter, Stephen helped man the support crew during the 2021 campaign. Xavier sadly never got the chance to make it up to Scotland to meet his cousin in person, which is something he had always planned to do.
the ghirl
Audrey Thom
Another Glasgow native and wife to Stephen, Audrey also formed part of the support crew during the first leg of the 2021 cycle. Always quick to keep the mood high, Audrey is the first to help out in any way and to get the laughs going at the same time.
the navigator
Bernadette Grier
Cousin to Fionna on the Maguire side of the family, Bernadette was instrumental on the 2021 bike ride as the main point of contact in the support vehicle. When they weren't busy trying to figure out how to slip money into each other's purses (as neither one lets the other pay for anything if they can help it), Bernadette and Fionna were on point in their support roles.
the coach
Dan Corlett
By name and by nature. Dan coached Aja during her time at both Nottingham Trent University and Nottingham Forest WFC. He journeyed up to Matlock for the final leg of 2021's cycle, to make sure Aja and co. didn't cut any corners - and rounded off his efforts at the finish line by presenting the crew with the biggest bottle of prosecco they had ever seen in their lives
the road slicker
Dominic O'Hara
Infamous to Peak district holiday motorists, this cyclist thought it prudent to load up his road bike panniers with 4 litres of solid ice, so as to avoid overheating on the final day of 2021's campaign. 10 km and 2 punctures later, he thought better of the plan.
the legal aid
James O'Hara
Freshly-made "Instagram-dad", James jumped at the opportunity to burn a few calories alongside his brothers on the final leg of 2021's cycle; no doubt using it as an excuse to sleep through any unwelcome disturbances in the night to follow. James joined again as a rider in 2023 for days 6 and 7.
the flexible one
Ocean Starr
Fellow Virgo and friend to Xavier, Ocean worked hard to return from injury to mount up for 2022's cycle. Probably the most athletic out of everyone, Ocean was not only riding in memory of Xavier but also in support of her partner Roberto, whose grandfather was diagnosed with Amyloidosis shortly before the 2022 ride began.
the chill one
Sarah Jenkins Basi
Cousin to Fionna and born and raised Ladysmith girl. Never one to get frustrated at even the most major of inconveniences, Sarah took the four days she trekked 2022's cycle in her stride (with her husband Jag giving her the occasional honk from his truck to speed her up while blocking the oncoming traffic from getting too close).
the cadet
Amber Jenkins
Another cousin and Xavier's original "best friend by blood", the two of them were only one year and one day apart in age. Despite spending every day since the age of 12 in the gym, Amber somehow managed to avoid the stationary bicycles in all that time. Nothing else really explains spending a 2 km incline in fifth gear back in 2022. Nonetheless, she made it in one piece, and managed to look stylish at the same time.
the support
Sherry Lewis
Auntie to Xavier and consigliere to Fionna in 2022's support crew, Sherry has been on both sides of the team since becoming a rider in the 2023 cycle. An inspiration on and off the bike, Sherry was the oldest rider to complete the journey in Ireland at 66 years of age.
the road block
Doug Jenkins
Uncle to Xavier, brother to Fionna, and resident bike mechanic during the ride. Commandeering one of two vehicles used to shield the cyclists on the Sea-to-Sky highway, Doug showed great composure at the growing fury of some motorists inconvenienced at having to delay their trips by a few minutes.
the mother trucker
Jag Basi
Commander of "The Citation" and husband to Sarah, Jag navigated the second of 2022's support vehicles, with a backroom crew of two of man's best friends to steady the ship. A trucker by trade, Jag slipped seamlessly into the role of obstructing his fellow motorists in their individual pursuits.
the barista
Roberto Car
Having been forced to withdraw as a cyclist from the 2022 campaign, Roberto proved himself useful in other ways, and for a period of seven days became the primary source of income for most British Columbian Tim Hortons establishments. His injury perhaps a blessing in disguise (at least in Lukes eyes as he drank french vanilla after french vanilla). Roberto was one of Xavier's closest friends, and has a grandfather that is currently battling Amyloidosis.
the brother
Kyan Aguirre
Involuntarily side-lined due to injury on the eve of 2022's cycle, Xavier's brother Kyan joined the support crew, all the while making sure the cyclists didn't get too big for their boots by cutting them down to size at every pit stop.
the one who actually cycles
Sean Lulgjuraj
Mountain bikes and commutes 40 km on his road bike daily for fun. Sean (otherwise known as "Luge") was massively helpful leading up to the Canada ride, supplying the riders with equipment and knowledge. Joining up with Xavier's team for 2022's final leg didn't phase him. He did his former colleague proud.
the fundraiser
Sabrina Lewis
Cousin to Xavier, Sabrina joined for the first couple days of the 2022 cycle as a spectator. She also played an important role outside of the ride, particularly on the fundraising front. With her efforts she was single handedly responsible for about 25% of the total money we raised in 2022.
the son of the Scot
Nathan McConway
Son to Mark, Nathan has cycled frequently with his dad, picking up plenty of tips which will no doubt come in handy during the 2023 cycle.
the Ballaghaderreen tour guide
Kieran Durcan
Cousin to Luke (Aja's partner) and Ballaghaderreen resident, Kieran is joining the 2023 tour from Ballaghaderreen onwards.
the one who's friends with Aja's partner's cousin
Alexander Damen
A Londonder working as a physio in the Irish HSE, Alex's knowledge may come in useful during the second half of the 2023 cycle, where he will be greeted by a few tired legs.
the barista (or is it barrister?)
Christopher Convey
Christopher is another seasoned pro who has been drafted in to ensure things proceed in an orderly manner for the second half of 2023's cycle in Ireland. He is keeping an eye out in particular for any unlawful traffic stops, for which he has purchased a brand new detachable dashcam.
